Three months after his rescue from an abusive boyfriend, twenty-two-year-old Romy Myers has landed his first legitimate job—bussing tables at his friend's new coffee shop. The job has brought him some stability after years of abuse have left him feeling damaged and broken. He's working hard on his panic and social anxiety, and those things are often tempered by the big, burly presence of Brendan Walker.

From the moment ex-football player Brendan helped rescue Romy from his ex's abuse, he's wanted to protect him. And he does, from a distance, with joking text messages, a new gym routine to toughen him up and a genuine friendship. So far it's been easy—but Brendan's feelings aren't just friendly anymore…

When an argument spirals out of control, a hot and heavy make-out session causes Romy's friendship with supposedly straight Brendan to reach a new level. The last thing Romy wants is to fall for another guy who could potentially shatter him, but Brendan also wakes up a part of him he thought had been destroyed by violence—his heart.

OK, so not it's not perfect (it's rare that books are) but in my honest opinion, this one was the best in the series. This was mainly because the 2 MCs, Romy and Brendan, were more likeable than the previous 2 couples. Brendan was a big old adorable teddy bear. And when he went all out to win Romy back, I went "awww!" However, there were a few things that I didn't like. 1) To some degree I understand Romy not making a police report right away because not everyone does, but it made absolutely no sense that not only did he not want to go the hospital but no one made him go. Respecting his wishes is one thing, risking his health is another. 2) I understand Romy's woe-is-me attitude, and his sense of shame, and being afraid of almost everything and everyone, but I never felt sorry for him. At no point in his life had he ever even tried to get a real job, until after he almost lost his life. 3) Brendan was 3 years in when he had to leave college. Another reviewer mentioned that despite this, he still spoke as if he was a bumpkin who never passed 10th grade. If he'd been someone who was just passed along because he was a great athlete (like in the real world) it'd be okay. But the book said he was actually smart & good in school. So why was his grammar & speech pattern worse than Romy's, who actually did drop out in 10th grade? 4) Even though it was explained in the book, I just couldn't understand Romy's automatic assumption that because Brendan beat up Carlos that it meant Brendan could be a danger to him. Speaking from experience, I've never - and wouldn't have - made that epic jump to a conclusion. But maybe that's just me.

Now, Ezra & Donner from Book 2 were here most of the story, because Romy lived with them and because Donner was Brendan's best friend. Ale & Jaime from Book 1 were here as well. I liked Ezra even better here, he was so sweet and compassionate when it came to Romy. It's funny that he didn't know Romy had feelings for him. I'm glad that Romy went to counseling and that he was open about everything with both Tag & Bren. I was so happy that Brendan decided to go back to school (maybe he'll take English, yeah?) and that Romy didn't hesitate to tell Topher that it was over between them for good. I liked that Romy & Bren's relationship moved kind of slow; not all relationships start out fast, and goodness knows, Romy needed to finally start out slow anyway. Also, 1 reviewer felt Bren's acceptance of his orientation was too quick, but hiding for 10 years is not quick. His mom's quick acceptance, I could see, but his family was still a little on the fence about it. Overall, it was a worthy read and made the series worth it.

Stand By You The Belonging Series Book 3 edition by AM Arthur Romance eBooks Reviews

Romy & Brendan are everything. This is a story of Romy who is trying to come to terms to what he went through and try to get back to some what normal. Which Romy has plenty of support especially from Brendan who is a silent support. I love how the relationship of Romy & Brendan started for it was friendship for most of the book. Then grow slowly to them having more stronger feelings for each other. This is Brendan's first real gay relationship and this is the first time Romy went into a relationship where sex isn't a major factor. So it was really something to watch them learn how to be together since neither have before. They have lots going against them including Romy's PSTD, crazy ex's, and keeping each other honest. Plus the others from the belong trilogy are present and a wonderful support system for my boys.
I've read all three of the Belonging series, as well as the two Restoration books already out, and out of those (so far, 'cause Elliott still gets his voice), this is my favorite.

Nothing in the book is easy, not what Romy and Brendan had to endure in their youths, and not what they endured as they were getting together. It makes perfect sense that Romy finds his safe place in Brendan before there is any intimacy, and reading the story will explain why. I disagree with other reviewers who said Romy was a downer or complainer. Yes, he had a slightly put-down and sarcastic inner voice, but that is reasonable and even expected for someone so old for such a young age. We needed to hear that inner voice change---that's his arc from dependent and clingy, to someone who stands up and looks his tormenter in the eye while he defends himself and protects Brendan. I loved Romy; I wanted to pick him up and put him in my pocket to shelter and protect from any more pain. That's AM Arthur's gift she breathes true life into characters, to the point I felt my was a window into this other world. I can clearly visualize these men, their heartaches, struggles, and triumphs.

I wanted to mention something other reviewers puzzled or complained about the way Brendan talks. As I was reading, it struck me that Brendan is just as shut down and introverted around his family as he is with outsiders. A man of few words, if you will. I don't think intelligence or level of education is an indicator of how well or poorly someone speaks. And authors will tell you about "the voices in their heads"; I would be interested to hear Arthur's perspective on how Brendan speaks. Were those the words she heard, or was there a shift in vernacular to imitate someone who is more subdued and does not like to talk very much, even around family or close friends. Although I can see people would be bothered by it since he's black, I find it incredibly ironic that people would take offense and didn't know or didn't care it stems from his withdrawn and incredibly shy personality, and not the color of his skin or his education level. Romy brings out the best in Brendan, and if you pay attention, you will notice the way his voice changes when Romy draws him out.

Again, I loved this series and will be re-reading them over and over again.
